General Questions


What programs can apply for Examples of Excelencia?

Programs at the associate, baccalaureate, and graduate levels as well as at community-based organizations, can apply for Examples of Excelencia.

What does the program profile submission form for Examples of Excelencia entail?

The 2023 Examples of Excelencia Program Profile Submission Guide provides detailed guidance on how you can create a compelling profile given Excelencia's review criteria, and includes a checklist of information you will need in order to complete the program profile submission form. 

What is the difference between a nomination and a program profile submission? 

Beginning the first week of February, individuals will have the ability to nominate a program that they believe is having an impact on Latino students in higher education as an Example of Excelencia

Upon being nominated for Examples of Excelencia, programs are notified and are encouraged to complete a program profile submission form. In order to be considered for each year's cycle, programs must submit a program profile. 

A nomination is not required to complete a submission form and does not impact the review process.

What is the deadline to nominate a program?

Program nominations must be received by March 17, 2023 at 11:59 pm ET/8:59 pm PT.

What is the deadline to submit a program profile  submission form?

Program profile submission forms must be received by March 31, 2023 at 11:59 pm ET/8:59 pm PT.

How are programs recognized and what do they receive?

When will I be notified if my program was selected as an Examples of Excelencia Finalist, and when is the scheduled public announcement? 

Programs selected as Examples of Excelencia Finalists will be personally notified by Excelencia in Education's program team before the national release of recognized programs in August 2023.

How will I know if my program was selected as an Example of Excelencia?

Programs selected as the annual Examples of Excelencia will be personally notified by Excelencia in Education's program team in late summer 2023. The national announcement is scheduled for fall 2023, where Examples programs are recognized during the capstone event Celebración de Excelencia held in Washington, DC.

Why does Excelencia have an external selection committee reviewing finalist programs? 

Excelencia's review process results in the selection of 20 finalists, all of whom respresent strong evidence-based practices and compelling narratives demonstrating impact in their respective categories. An external committee of experts ensures that the final selection of 4 Examples is fair and impartial.

Who is on the Examples of Excelencia external selection committee?

Our external selection committee changes every year but is generally made up of leaders from various sectors of higher education, including funders, institutional leaders, researchers, and other stakeholders in Latino student success.

How can my program work towards becoming ready to apply for Examples of Excelencia?

Where can I receive more information on how to best serve Latino students in higher education?

There are many resources from which you can learn about how to best serve Latino students in higher education. You may view Excelencia's research publications to learn more. In addition, you can explore our Growing What Works Database, a resource for practitioners, institutional leaders, funders, and policymakers interested in evidence-based practices that accelerate Latino student success in higher education. Lastly, our Excelencia in Action network facilitates engagement on analysis, practice and leadership and brings attention to those having a positive impact on Latino student success.

Nomination Questions


Why should I nominate a program?

Since 2005, Excelencia has brought attention to more than 380 programs that are part of a committed network for Latino student success. Programs with a proven record of accelerating Latino student success have the opportunity to join a national community of leaders intentionally focused on increasing Latino student success.

Do I need to submit a nomination for my own program?

No, you do not have to nominate your program. We prefer programs have a nomination for their program in our system before completing a program profile submission form. However, a nomination is not required to complete a submission form.

All nominated programs are alerted of their nomination for Examples of Excelencia and be encouraged to complete a program profile submission form for the 2023 cycle. Only programs who complete a submission form are considered for this year’s cycle.

If I am just nominating a program, do I need to create an account on this online system?

No, you can submit a program nomination without creating an account. However, please consider creating an account to nominate a program. Creating an account makes it easier to nominate several programs at once, save your progress on a nomination, and return year after year to nominate programs.

Do I need to notify the program I am nominating that they have been nominated?

No, you are not required to notify the program, Excelencia will do this for you. All nominated programs are alerted of their nomination for Examples of Excelencia by our program team and be encouraged to complete a program profile submission for the 2023 cycle.

I am nominating a program on the last day before program nominations close, will the program I nominate have time to submit a program profile submission form for Examples of Excelencia?

Yes, programs nominations close on March 17, 2023 and the program profile submission form period closes on March 31, 2023. To ensure that programs have enough time to work on their submission form, we encourage individuals to submit program nominations as early as possible. Should nominated programs need additional time to complete a submission form, they must contact the Examples program team at Examples@EdExcelencia.org.

Program Profile Submission Form Questions


May I fax, scan, or mail the completed program profile submission form directly to the Excelencia  in Education program team?

No, only program profile submission forms completed through our online system are considered.

Can previously recognized programs submit a program profile submission form for consideration?

Programs recognized as Programs to Watch and Examples of Excelencia Finalists are eligible to submit for Examples of Excelencia every year until they are recognized as the Example of Excelencia in their respective category.

Can programs that work with high school students  apply for Examples of Excelencia?

Yes, as long as the program is based at an associate, baccalaureate, or graduate institution or a community-based organization and provides services directly related to Latino student success in higher education. Examples of Excelencia  specifically seeks to identify and promote evidence-based practices that accelerate Latino student success in higher education.

Can a doctoral program apply for Examples of Excelencia?

Yes, programs based at an associate, baccalaureate, or graduate institution or a community-based organization and provide services directly related to Latino student success in higher education can apply for Examples of Excelencia.

What information is required to complete the Examples of Excelencia program profile submission form and is there guidance on completing the submission form?

Please view our 2023 Examples of Excelencia Program Profile Submission Guide which provides detailed guidance about what program materials you will need to fill out the program profile submission form and how you can create a compelling submission form given Excelencia's review criteria.

Does the program profile submission form contain a character or word limit? Does it include spaces? 

The program profile submission form has word count limits per section instead of character limits. The limits guide programs to be more succinct in telling their story to a larger audience.

If I exit the browser where I am completing my online program profile submission form, will my work be saved? 

No, you must save your submission form before exiting your browser by clicking the "save" button, or else all your progress will be lost. Click “save” continuously to ensure all work on your submission form is saved. Once you complete your submission form, make sure you receive a confirmation email indicating your submission form was received.

Before beginning the program profile submission form, we recommend downloading a blank copy of the submission form here and working on your submission form in that document. After completing the submission form in that document, you may return to the online system to copy/paste your answers in the appropriate sections of the submission form.

How will I know If I successfully submitted my program profile submission form?

After submitting the program profile submission form, a confirmation message should appear on your screen. A confirmation email will also be sent to the email you provided in the submission form.

I received an email confirmation that Excelencia  in Education received my program profile submission form, are there additional steps that I need to take in this process? 

No, Excelencia staff will follow up about your submission form should they have any additional questions. To learn more about what happens after a program provides their completed submission form to our program team, please visit our Annual Cycle webpage.

Can I make changes to a program profile submission form I submitted?

No, to make changes to a completed submission form, you must contact Excelencia's program team as soon as possible to request a change. Please contact our program team at: Examples@EdExcelencia.org.
